WHAT IS IT?
Voted the World’s Best Vodka by the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition, Chase Vodka is the only UK distillery to offer a premium vodka that is made entirely from seed to bottle, giving a quality vodka with provenance.
The base of the oak smoked vodka is the distillery's award-winning, three times distilled Chase original vodka, made from gluten-free King Edward and Lady Claire potatoes grown on the family farm in Herefordshire. The vodka is then blended down with Herefordshire's finest oak smoked water, which is made via using water from the estate's borehole that has been allowed to sit in the coolest part of the smokehouse for 5 days in order to pick up that delicate sweet but ashy smoky flavour. The initial peppery haze on the nose opens up to a lightly sweet and creamy oak smoke with delicate notes of ash flitting by the breeze. The hints of charcoal and black pepper follow through on the nose.
Alcoholic strength: 40% ABV
WHO'S BEHIND IT?
The Chase family have been in potato farming for generations and before turning to making vodka (and gin), William Chase was in fact the brains (and driving force) behind the hugely successful brand of potato crisps called Tyrrells. It was when in the US researching packaging methods, that he stumbled on a distillery producing potato vodka After some years of further research (and lots of tinkering), it wasn't until April Fool's Day that the first batch of vodka for release was distilled in June 2008 with the bespoke copper batch pot still commissioned by Will from a family firm. Today all bottles are stilled filled and sealed by hand.
Today, Will remains heavily involved in the operations of the farm and distillery but sons Harry and James have been roped in to make this a real family business - Harry oversees the farming side of things whilst James oversees all the "meet and greet" at the farm as well as travelling the world spreading the goodness of Chase.
HOW TO DRINK IT - SOME SERVING SUGGESTIONS
Stick this in a Bloody Mary or make yourself a dry Martini with this.
Smoked Bloody Mary
At the Chase Distillery, 16 tonnes of potatoes makes only 1000 litres of alcohol!
The rectification column of the copper pot still at Chase is the tallest of its kind in the world and at more than 70ft, rises through the roof of the barn in which it is located!
