You've done wine and cheese. You've probably done whisky and cheese, or gin and cheese. Heck, you've probably done cheese with everything. But have you done a head to head where you compare whether wine or cocktails pair better with cheese, all in the same session?
In Round 1 of the inaugural Bartender vs Sommelier series, we're doing just that. We're taking 3 cheeses and we'll be pairing those with a tasting flight of 3 cocktails. We've enlisted the services of expert sommelier Vincenzo Cuomo to pair the same cheeses with a tasting flight of 3 top notch wines. Our theme for the night is Italiano so you can expect to taste some fantastic cheese and liquor that run to that theme. You can expect the wines to be the harder to find variety, and not anything you can get in your run of the mill bottle shop.
Vincenzo is a charming host and will talk you through the wines you'll be tasting on the evening. Representing the bartender corner and talking you through the drinks of the spirited variety will be Cocktail Co founder Inoka Ho and we will certainly be putting up a challenge. You'll score the pairings as we go along and at the end of the night, we'll tally them and find out:
Will it be BARTENDER or will it be SOMMELIER who triumphs?
One thing's for sure, this is just in time for Christmas and you'll walk away with some kick ass pairings that you can do yourself at your own parties.
As always, the location is revealed only to those who score a seat, however we can say that the location is right next to a major Sydney train station. This will be our final SCC event we announce our 2019 summer program in a different location.
Originating from the Amalfi Coast in Italy where he ran the wine section of a longstanding deli and wine shop in Positano, Vincenzo holds a sommelier diploma from the Association of Italian Sommeliers. He's also a cheese nerd and a member of the Slow Food Movement - having completed cheese qualifications with the latter, we can honestly say this is a guy who also knows his cheeses. Since arriving in Australia, he has worked at a number of establishments and nowadays you can find him working the floor on selected nights at Capriccio, an Italian restaurant in Leichhardt that is helmed by ex-Tetsuya chef Nicole Bamford.
Secret Cocktail Club is our roaming pop up where we stage a cocktail class with a difference in Sydney. Taking place at various secret locations in the city, with clues only provided to those who are attending, each session focusses on a different spirit and the usage of that particular spirit in a cocktail. You'll take your seat at the table alongside other guests, and led by your host, let the conversation unfold. Learning whilst you are drinking - imagine this as a secret supper club, but for drinks. Seats for our Secret Cocktail Club pop ups have historically sold out in record time, so make sure you sign up to our mailing list to be the first to hear about the next installation.
